The family snug in Nina Gee’s Georgian home has had a number of incarnations - as a formal dining room and later as an office. But Nina and her family felt that they could better use this small overlooked space and so have transformed it into a cosy den they can all enjoy year round.

Nina, an interior stylist who can be found on Instagram @ninageeathome, told us: “I would describe my interior style as somewhere between Scandinavian, Bohemian and eclectic! I don’t like to label myself too much as I tend to flit between lots of different vibes and then translate that into something that feels uniquely me.”

Bold and beautiful

She added: “In this room we wanted a relaxing space where we could snuggle up and feel cocooned by nature. The rest of our home is decorated in light neutral shades so I wanted this room to be a contrast that would feel considered and help the lighter areas of the house pop. I felt that if we were going to go dark, we should be bold and go dark all over!”

So Nina opted to colour drench the small room in a greyish, greenish brown for a warm natural vibe that would elevate its petite proportions. Then she added wall to wall floating shelves which now house an ever evolving collection of interesting artifacts and houseplants. After bringing the original fireplace to life with a marble paint effect and picking out the original sash window with its concealed shutters in a matt black chalk paint, Nina completed the look with Levanzo flooring from the Palio LooseLay collection.

Timeless elegance

With its subtle blend of tan and brown colouring, with authentic lighter highlights and grain details, Levanzo was the perfect choice for a neutral base that would suit Nina’s evolving decor. By laying the full sized planks in a herringbone pattern, Nina has introduced a natural sense of movement that adds visual interest and depth.

Nina explained: “Choosing the flooring for the snug was a really easy decision to make as we knew we wanted to go for the same style and finish that we have in our open plan kitchen diner and living room. Bringing the same flooring into this room too has given our house a much more cohesive feel.”

Stress free installation

Palio LooseLay is designed to be easy to fit over a smooth and level subfloor without the need for adhesive, just a little tackifier around the edges.

Nina said: “We found the flooring simple to fit and pretty much stress free. My husband and I were able to get it down in the space of a weekend, including cutting, fitting and tackifying. I love how you can easily relift and adjust pieces if you’re not quite happy with the fit. It’s just perfect and has transformed this room. Practically, it’s also helped to insulate our home as there is now no gap between skirting board and flooring or between the floorboards themselves.”
